Robinson R44 Transition Course

10-Hour Program
For Rated Rotorcraft Pilots Seeking R44 PIC Endorsement (SFAR 73 Compliance)

 Course Objective

To provide the required flight and ground instruction in accordance with SFAR No. 73 to 14 CFR Part 61, qualifying a rated helicopter pilot to legally act as Pilot-in-Command (PIC) of the Robinson R44.

Regulatory Basis

SFAR No. 73, Section 2(c)(2) to 14 CFR Part 61 mandates:

  • 5 hours of flight time in an R44 if previously experienced in Robinson helicopters (e.g., R22)

  • 10 hours if no prior Robinson time

  • Ground training topics must include:

    • Energy management

    • Rotor RPM decay & recovery

    • Low-G hazards

    • Rotor stall & mast bumping

    • Governor failures

    • Low rotor RPM horn response

  • A logbook endorsement certifying compliance with all SFAR 73 requirements

Course Structure – 5 to 10 Hour Transition Options

1️⃣Aircraft & Systems Overview POH, limitations, SFAR content

2️⃣Normal Flight Operations, Takeoff, hover, pattern work

3️⃣Emergency Procedures, Low RPM, governor off, autorotations

4️⃣SFAR 73 Hazard Awareness, Low-G, rotor stall, mast bumping

5️⃣Confined Area Approaches, Off-airport, precision landings

6️⃣Review & Evaluation, Final proficiency check

Total Training Time:
• Flight: 5.0 – 10.0 hours
• Ground: 4.0 – 5.0 hours

 Note: Minimum 10 hours flight required if no previous Robinson time.

Completion Requirements

 5–10 hrs dual flight instruction in Robinson R44
Completion of all SFAR 73 ground topics
Demonstrated maneuver proficiency
SFAR 73 logbook endorsement from authorized instructor

Course Duration

Typically completed in 5–6 days depending on pilot availability, proficiency, and weather.
