INSTRUMENT PROFICIENCY CHECK

Helicopter Instrument Proficiency Check (IPC)

FAA-Mandated Evaluation for Maintaining IFR Currency – 14 CFR § 61.57(d)

Maintain your IFR privileges. Fly with precision and confidence in all conditions.

 Course Objective

To evaluate and restore instrument currency for helicopter pilots who have not met the 6-month recency requirements under

14 CFR § 61.57(c).

The IPC ensures the pilot maintains proficiency in instrument flight operations and procedures necessary for safe IFR flight.

 When Is an IPC Required?

An Instrument Proficiency Check is required when a pilot fails to meet the instrument currency requirements (i.e., 6 instrument approaches, holding procedures, and intercepting/tracking within the past 6 calendar months).

If more than 12 calendar months have passed since currency was lost, only a successful IPC with a qualified CFII will restore IFR privileges.

IPC Components

The IPC consists of ground instruction and a flight portion to demonstrate competency in:

Ground Instruction Topics
• IFR regulations and airspace
• Approach plate briefing & setup
• Alternate minimums & lost comm procedures
• Weather interpretation for IFR flight
• Risk management and decision-making in IMC

 Flight Instruction Tasks

(in simulated or actual IMC)
• Holding patterns and entries
• Precision and non-precision approaches (e.g., ILS, RNAV, VOR)
• Missed approach procedures
• IFR departures and enroute navigation
• Partial panel and system failure scenarios
• Intercepting and tracking navigation systems

Completion Requirements

✔ Successful demonstration of required instrument procedures
✔ Completion of both ground and flight portions with a qualified CFII
✔ Logbook endorsement verifying IPC completion and restored currency

 Hourly Rates

Robinson R44     $620.00/Hr.

Ground Instruction    $65.00/Hr.

Flight time varies based on pilot proficiency. Minimum IPC flight time typically ranges from 1.5 to 3.0 hours.

Who Should Schedule an IPC?

• Pilots with expired instrument currency
• Pilots preparing for IFR operations under Part 135
• Military or corporate pilots transitioning to civilian IFR flying
• CFIs or CFII candidates refreshing their instrument skills
